Does anybody know what the cracks in the Washington monument came from & are for?

A 1992 study commissioned by the National Park Service found several serious cracks near the top that have let rain the interior, damaging the commemorative stones inside. There aren't any cracks in the renovated version. But the Liberty Bell is cracked, too.
