How does working out on an elliptical trainer compare to running?

My speed on the eliptical is alot faster than on the track. I think its because the machine lets you push against it in all portions of your stride, using more of your range of motion and muscles. The amount of energy you use to do a mile on the machine should be same as on the track; the machine is just more efficient at converting your stride into motion than the flat ground.
